San Augustine County Courthouse

The San Augustine County Courthouse is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark listed on the National Register.

San Augustine County’s second courthouse was a two-story Italianate style building with a cupola. The 1890 structure was located on the northeast corner of the 1834 public square facing Columbia Street.

It was constructed of hand-molded brick from a kiln near San Augustine, and replaced the 1854 courthouse after it was removed from the same site. Although construction details are limited, pictures of this interesting structure still exist.

The 1890 building was sold for $800 and torn down in 1928 when the present courthouse was completed.

The 1927 San Augustine County Courthouse stands in the middle of the historic Courthouse Square laid out in 1834 by Thomas McFarland according to the American Plan, a first in Texas.

Designed by noted architect Shirley Simons, the building is constructed of Texas Lueders limestone in Classic Revival style with elements of Art Deco.
