Old Town Jail The old town jail was built in 1884 of native clay brick, hand molded in a local brick yard. This building replaced an old log jail, built in 1841, of similar size and shape. The walls are 17 inches thick on the first floor and 13 inches thick on the second floor. The standing seam metal roof is 106 years old and has never leaked. The ground floor housed the Sheriff and Justice of Peace offices. It is said that no prisoner ever escaped this jail. |
The building is the architecture office of Ray Stripling and the late Raeford Stripling, noted Texas Restoration Architect. Visible from the public alleyway at Montgomery Street. |
