Capt. Downs House
Built in the early 1900s by Capt. E. D. Downs. Downs came to San Augustine at the turn of the century as a partner in the mercantile firm that still carries his name, the Clark-Downs Co.
The lumber for this palatial two-story home was cut from family lands in Newton County.
Logs were floated down the Sabine River to Orange where they were cut into lumber at the Stark Mill and shipped to San Augustine, bringing a part of Downs' old home to the new.
The property is now owned by Patrick H. and Dorothy Fussell and is operated as a Bed and Breakfast. |
