China Grove/ Samuel Davis Home

This log house was built by Samuel S. Davis on land which was part of the E. Quirk Survey in the early 1840s.

The home was purchased by Dr. Benjamin F. Sharp and his wife Martha Ann Hall Sharp in 1848.

Mrs. Sharp was the daughter of Governor Hall of Tennessee, and U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is a descendent of the Sharp family.

China Grove is a dogtrot house, flanked by two large rooms on each side. The two original chimneys are made of hand-hewn rock.

Located five miles NW of San Augustine off FM 711 on CR 202, China Grove is currently owned by the San Augustine County Historical Society. This property is not open to the public, but can be seen from the road.
